A bunch of questions – Updated.

had been posted by George Siemens here (TB). In his post „Does technology connect or disconnect us from others?“ are a lot of questions mentioned worth to think about for many of people engaged in preaching the use of technology. Three things kept me thinking.

We search Google and think we have acquired knowledge. We blog and think we have subjected our ideas to peer review. Or, we publish an article on our website and think that qualifies as a publication. I partially understand the negatives being expressed by these authors. Times of transition are unsettling.

Yes the times are unsetteling. And it reminds me on a lot of discussion I had with lecturers and colleques claiming the sadly changed quality of students work. (Just bringing up the C&P phenomena). But in fact there are many discussions going into one thread. And often enough there is only the simple soultion in mind. And those solutions sound like „We will have to ban Wikiedia“ – to noun one for all the other tools etc. Just staying in the observational position – why not thinking about helping the students to get in the real touch with this possibilities?  And this means f.I.  – use by reading, value for knowledge and finally decide your position. Using the information delivered AND the discussion about as one point you may start with and then go deeper aiming to aprove. Develop an own strategy to get more enriching informations by using search engines and libraries. In fact – they are doing a lot of steps scientist did also in past – but with a more of information. And this points to the value of information nowerdays. Are we ready to recognize that the truth of knowledge in the sense of verification is really speedy changing? It has been changing all the times before. But we have to consider that with the speed of information distribution opposite opinions or controverses gaining up also. What a change for the need to learn that knowledge is only in value from the moment told in the context told – and this is what matters also later on, when goig to understand all the traditional roots.

Update – because this didn’t let me go last night: Here in Germany the last weeks – a magazine titeled: „Computer -making you stupid!“ Thinking about what angers me in this sentence marked with an explanation mark? Because it is irrational. Without reading the paper itself – this cannot be true. Why? Really because, if i have a ordinator – and i don’t use – would it make me stupid by his still presence? Finally to get the point. It isn’t the technoogy itself which should be in the view of the critical minds. It is the use of technology. And If an argue goes in direction of misuse – there could also be a real and valuable use. And going to this level there is a potenital to bring students to their benefit to use. And maybe by enriching them in alternate actions in their use. Valued use can be learned and offered. And maybe in the discourse of the critical voices and sciences – this little difference could decover a lot of serious questions.

Additional if you stay at the „use-tech“ point: There are two actors who can be able to learn by this way. Content producers – can also learn to guide the potential reader about  how the information should be used or not. Many Bloggers claim their blog as a think-tank or mind in progress. This maybe useful for readers too. 

Before I close my 2 cents just a remark to the citated report: I just wonder, why there is not recognized the difference in quality between the connections using different tools? How could they been seen in the networking metaphor? I think this could also enrich this discussion.

The AG podcasting Team has provided an overview on the design, conception and purpose of  their podcast „Bildung in Dialog“  in a leaflet, which is now also available in English and German for download.

Sozologie und Podcasts

„Wir Sozn!“ und „Der Sonntagssoziologe„, das sind zwei Podcasts, die  sich dem Themenfeld der Soziologie verschrieben haben. Beide leisten wichtige und kurzweilige Beiträge, die ich gerne zum Hören weiterempfehle. Bislang habe ich alle die Folgen vom Sontagssoziologen durch. Sie haben mir die bussige Heimfahrt ernsthaft versüsst. Jetzt kommen die Sozns dran. Wie wäre es – schreibt den Betreibern doch einmal Eure Lieblingsepisode! :-)

Podcasting an der Uni KL

Von Prof. Arnold ist ja zur Zeit etwas in unserem Podcast zu hören. Von daher ist der gedankliche Weg nicht weit zu Jun. Prof. Dr. Henning Pätzold. Er betreibt als Eränzung zu seinen Vorlesungen einen Podcast, der sicherlich nicht nur seinen Studierenden entsprechende Informationen nahelegen könnte. Manches ist live aus dem Hörsaal, manches reflektierend. Immer wird der Kontext zwischen Vorlesung und Podcast transparent. Hier ist sehr viel Gedankenblut eingeflossen. Mir gefällt der Stil, das Grundkonzept und auch der Inhalt. So mag ich mir Podcasting an Hochschulen gerne häufiger vorstellen. Wer sich selbst ein Bild machen möchte, schaue, bzw. höre hier nach. Ich hätte nur zwei Wünsche. Den einen in Richtung K-Town weiter zu machen. Dan anderen gerichtet an die eventuell interessierten Hörerschaft auch verschwenderisch durch inhaltlichen Anmerkungen die Motivation des Podcasters zu steigern :-)

Der Lehrer als Gedankenkatalysator

Noch ganz im Eindruck einer Konferenz resümiert Dave Truss hier in wenigen Sätzen eine menge von Ereignissen und Impulsen. Zum Schluss verweist er auf ein von ihm eingerichtetes Voicethread. Ich finde die Fragen und dort zusammengefassten Impulse sehr bereichernd. Von daher denke ich, dass wir von allen seiten hierzu etwas beizutragen hätten. Bis denne Andreas.

… but maybe it can avoid your problems later. Just to forward a lesson learned using this way. The time we started our podcast „Bildung im Dialog“  we hoped but not knew really this project survives more than 5 Episodes. Nobody knows starting such a small – student driven – no budged project which ways it will take. OK. Our first Episode has been published at the 01. 06.2006! Now we entered the Episode number 41. In the main our episodes are about 20 Mb. We took out those special Episodes like the POEDES Series and the videos of Theater plays here. Just for avoiding misunderstandings – here the local ict department allows the best possible service you can imagine and i am sure that we will find a local solution for the upcoming problem I want to point out now:

 

Yesterday we reached the disc limit. Boom. I personally expected the last 8 or nine episodes to get the mainly loved root@ mail. 

So just as our lesson learned: Plan to have as much as possible storage where you can put your files on it – independent if you are planning in small steps and sizes or not. 

Ok. Where is the Problem – you may think?! One Strategy could be just deleting the old files and archive them anywhere else. This may be a solution. Recognize your win and loose. First the wins: For the first attempt the problem seems to be solved. But there is one point not well discussed but definitively observed: Our oldest episodes seem to be those with the most access. How to explain this phenomena? It’s the well discussed theory of the „long tail“.  Exactly the sum of the peak episodes is over the two years in factor 5 to those we could call usual listeners. Maybe this are recipients who reach this podcast driven by interest, tags in search engines, recommendations or just following a link somebody pointed out before. As soon as we started our podcast challange – we also started a wiki documenting the episodes, their topics and the interviewees as good as the small time budged allowed. We did so because we had in mind, that there were a lot of people going from topic to podcast and then perhaps they are in the choice to stay and catch up the feed o just to download this. Are there other strategies? Another thought was to shift to an external or own server. In fact everybody in the scene may know: This is digital suicide. We had this in the change from the web server. Even with a soft link and your listener would not recognize: What you loose is more than 10 handful listeners. You loose a whole bunch of reputation. Take some tools, like technorati or Clustr Maps.   

Now an open question to all tekkies out in the blogosphere: Am I right, changing just all files to an external server will double all posts as renewed in the feed? So that all recipients will get all messages as unread and all aggregators will offer those as downladable? The switch from „www“ to „userpages“ did this effect. Any idea how to handle this without provocationg 500 MB *  300 Users Data traffic plus the anger of the recipients and the loose of image? Every suggestion or hint of solution is welcome.

Update: The solution of our ict department was to give us more 100 mb. This stopped the count down. Thats the good news. IMH The consequences are (in german language announced at the BiDBlog) to keep all participating students involved. Currently working hard on also sustainable solutions. Thank you all, who lent me an ear or brought up a bunch of ideas about this problem.

Einen kurzweiligen Impulsvortrag darf das Team von Bildung im Dialog versprechen. Prof. Dr. Rolf Arnold von der TU KL führt in seinem Impuls die Podiumsdiskussion ein. Spannende vier Thesen, die sicherlich der Diskussion vor Ort die hoffentlich auch in Netz ihren gebührenden Nachhall empfindet. Hier geht es zur Episode 41.

Language matters?!

The topic in general was on my inner blogging agenda long time ago. But now two things came interestingly together in one moment. During writing this following sentence (the context will be posted later):

… so feel free …
to participate in the language you want to choose – with the idea you want to share. But try also find a way as many as possible people can see / hear / follow your part.

My eye has been caught by an incoming mail, where the emerge community kindly pleases me to revise my aggregated feeds, because they are mainly in german language

(Important update: Not because of the language, because of the oversyndication. (it was maybe a bad idea to embed unasked all feeds (project blog, podcast, this blog)).  But it raised up the topic so I left it here. Anyhow complained or not the problem is the same: You are confronted with informations which may be interesting for you – but you don’t know, because it is in foreign language.  To leave no doubt – the work and outcome inside this community is sure one of the bet thing I’ve ever seen in the web. And I feel honored having been asked to participate anyhow. And to make shure again there isn’t any negative thought left. But in fact it is funny, when the elgg system behind welcomes you in your language, navigates with you in your language – so you are no aware of the problem behind. Or if you are aware you are entrapped to use it otherwise. Sorry from my side having somebody bothered there. 

It is the more general question how to deal with language in future – pointing to the great possibilities and evolutions of the web, you may call it web2.X. 

How do you deal the language problem? Are you aware of this as a problem for you? 

Two little things are rising in my inner eye:

  • The first: When i started the blog i never imagined so many peoples would read this. Thanx a small conversation with David Truss i know there are more peoples like me using dictionary or google translator for reading blogs in foreign languages. For sure I think i will never be able to follow japanese or kyrillic blogs.    
  • The second: Writing in foreign language takes so much more time. Maybe it is good for quality – but many deep-thought posts are dense in content therefore seems impossible.  

So – how do you handle with languages and blogs? Is blogging in english the only advance you would give to your students? Maybe because of self-marketing issues? How do you argue? And for the non native english speaking readers: How do you handle the problem, when you offer your students something in english. Are they complaining? Do they oppose? In the wish seeing anyhow a discussion …
