Thanks for the response to my question. I use wikis, blogs, discussion boards in my teaching but these sites are very specifically setup as education sites. I find social media very useful for both informal and formal learning, so I'm a regular on Twitter and YouTube.

Facebook was designed for people to get together with their friends and families. Kids use it primarily to be kids, silly, social, occasionally obnoxious kids. My 20 something daughter doesn't allow me access to her page, in the same way I'm not invited to her parties. Yes learning happens there as people share websites, ideas and videos, but if we don't allow young people their space they will just move somewhere else.
